What are Bach Flower Remedies?

The Bach (pronounced 'batch') Flower system was discovered by Dr Edward Bach, a renowned homeopathic doctor, in the 1930s. His aim was to make treatment of emotional maladies accessible to everyone by a simple system of natural medicine.

He discovered this approach by pure experience. On visits to the countryside he would contemplate beside or under certain plants and trees, noting how these affected his mood. He came to realise that 38 different species encompassed the realm of human emotion, or more precisely the gamut of archetypal soul states. As each state has both
a positive and negative aspect, so each species manifests the ability to change the aberrant state with which it was associated.

With great diligence he perfected the practice if curing these disharmonious soul states and thereby returning the individual to a healthy state of mind, all with the aid of selected flower essences. In order to capture this natural effect and make the healing potential of these plants available he developed a creative new system of manufacture.

Ingeniously he discovered that by floating the flowers in a glass bowl of spring water in the sunshine, the essence if the remedy passed: into the water. In some cases, especially less sunnier periods, he used a boiling method for species flowering at that time. In both cases the resulting infusion was then preserved in brandy and used to make the Bach Flower Remedies.

It should be noted that although Dr. Bach was a homoeopath, he
stated quite emphatically that his Bach Flower Remedies were not
homoeopathic preparations.

What are the specific remedies?

There are 38 diferent Bach Flower Remedies. Click here to view a description of them all.

Choosing the correct remedy

Choosing the correct Bach Flower remedy can be as easy or difficult as admitting how you are feeling. Read through the descriptions to detect one or perhaps several remedies that fit either yourself or the intended patient. The object is to come as close as possible to the negative state being exhibited. Try to be as honest as possible in admitting to flaws. Try to be more caring than judgmental, and more intuitive than intellectual. Read the descriptions as trends rather than merely as absolutes. Use them to gain insight into negative behaviour patterns and thereby as clues toward an
effective cure. Since we are all unique a different solution may be required for any given problem.

Remember that no harm will come if the remedy is incorrect. In cases where several remedies seem to be required then these can be taken as a mixture.

How to take Bach Flower Remedies

Dilute 2 drops of the remedy in a small glass of water. Sip the contents at intervals during the day until relief is obtained. If a longer course is required prepare a "treatment bottle" with 2 drops in 30ml of spring water in a dropper bottle. From this take 4 drops 4 times daily or as required until better. If a combination of remedies is to be prepared use 2 drops from each stock bottle as above, but try not to exceed six remedies in total.

Sometimes it is dfficult to decide between the remedies and some people might well feel that they need most of the remedies at once (this has happened!). Think of it as peeling an onion and deal with the most distressing, prominent symptoms first - and once these are less conspicuous treat the next layer of symptoms, and so on. Initially, it may be helpful to consult a registered Bach Flower Centre practitioner who will guide you in your choice, particularly if you are having difficulties in deciding between remedies. The aim of a practitioner is to guide and train you so that eventually you can accurately treat yourself. All the doses above are safe for any member of the family, there being no side effects with these remedies.

Bach Rescue Remedy

This very special combination of five flower essences is indispensable in crises and emergencies, where the symptoms of shock, distress or acute anxiety prevail. It is composed of: Star of Bethlehem - for trauma and numbness, Rock Rose - for terror and panic, Impatiens - for tension and irritability, Cherry Plum - for fear of losing control, and Clematis - for being detached from the situation or passing out. Recovery Remedy is taken at twice the strength of other remedies, by taking 4 drops per dose or mixing 4 drops in a stock bottle of 30ml as described above. It should be carried as an emergency for all manner of crises. Recovery Cream is an external preparation to soothe and restore the skin.
