Your First Visit

All osteopaths are trained to a standard and regulated under law by the GOsC. Not all osteopathic treatments will follow exactly the same model, some practitioners use very gentle seeming techniques, others more robust ‘traditional’ types of treatment.

I was trained a while ago and have adjusted what I was taught over the years as a result of practice and additional training.

On your first visit I will take a full case history asking you about your current problem and any past history. I will then conduct a physical examination using observation and palpation to evaluate the skin, muscle tone and standing posture, I will look at you. I will then ask you to perform simple movements whilst standing or sitting, I will asses the movement.

Once on the couch may move your body through similar movements to gain the fullest picture of the tissue state and the ability of the joints, to try and get a feel for thhe bdy and the movement patterns.

If I do not think it is appropriate to proceed with treatment I will explain why and we can discuss the best course of action.

Treatment techniques consists of muscular massage, articulatory movements to stretch or mobilise the joints and if appropriate gentle joint manipulation to restore the full range of movement.

During assessment and treatment the most important thing is the patients comfort and confidence, so at all times patients are encouraged to feedback to the practitioner (me) how they feel.

The diagnosis of the problem will be properly explained and the likely outcome of treatment will be discussed. Any additional advice and exercise or lifestyle modification will also be discussed.

The first visit will take around an hour and follow up treatments will last about 35-45 minutes. Commonly patients find that between 2 and 6 visits most beneficial.

Some patients find that periodic treatments are helpful in preventing recurring problems.
